Shortwave Radiogram, 17-20 August 2018

Hello friends,

Last week’s 20xPSKR63 was successfully decoded by some listeners, but for the most part the mode showed too many errors for typical shortwave conditions. The MFSK128 had better results, but it produced more errors than the slower MFSK64.

A list of videos of Shortwave Radiogram from the last two weekends is at the bottom of this email. An audio archive of Shortwave Radiogram is maintained by Mark in the UK. And analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will include MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64, with six images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 61, 17-20 August 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:40 MFSK32: Program preview
3:00 "Zero euro" bills with Karl Marx's image*
7:38 MFSK128: Parker Solar Probe will travel close to sun*
11:47 MFSK64: Czech politics of invasion 50th anniversary*
16:49 Russian cosmonauts' eight-hour spacewalk from ISS*
21:46 Budget cuts might shut down WWV and WWVH*
25:51 Painting of the week*
28:10 MFSK32: Closing announcements

Shortwave Radiogram, 24-27 August 2018

Hello friends,

Apologies to those of you who were tuned in to last Sunday’s 2330-2400 UTC broadcast on 7780 kHz. A few seconds after the broadcast began, another WRMI audio program came on and stayed for the rest of the half hour. I heard later from Rafael in Colombia that he heard Shortwave Radiogram on 5010 kHz, another of WRMI’s frequencies. WRMI was having a difficult day: Lightning in the area disrupted some of their systems.

You can still listen to program 61, and decode from the audio, thanks to videos provided by Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC) and Scott in Ontario (Monday 0800 UTC – thanks to Scott for tuning in early Monday after the missing Sunday 2330 UTC show). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK, and analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.

This weekend, Shortwave Radiogram will consist of our favorite combination of MFSK32, MFSK64, and MFSK128, with eight MFSK images and some interesting news stories.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 62, 24-27 August 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:37 Program preview
2:53 MFSK32: U.S. Agency for Global Media is new name for BBG*
6:28 MFSK128: New system for underwater-airborne comms*
11:56 MFSK64: Fake news detector algorithm better than human*
17:41 Cargo ship will attempt Russian Arctic voyage*
20:18 Images of the week*
28:31 MFSK32: Closing announcements

Additional Shortwave Radiogram tomorrow [Wednesday]

Hello friends,

Shortwave Radiogram just had a miserable weekend, given the technical mishaps and very poor propagation.

As compensation, Shortwave Radiogram program 62 will be transmitted one more time, Wednesday, 1800-1830 UTC, on 6070 kHz, via Channel 292 in Germany. This is just before Slow Scan Radio at 1830-1900 UTC, also on 6070 kHz.

For details, see http://swradiogram.net/post/17734240385 ... vibrations

Outside of Europe, this broadcast can be received via http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901 ; or other SDRs in Europe.

I hope you can tune in.

Shortwave Radiogram, 31 August-3 September 2018

Hello friends,

Last weekend was very difficult for Shortwave Radiogram, between the poor propagation and technical mishaps. Saturday at 1600 UTC, the transmitter in Bulgaria went off the air shortly after Shortwave Radiogram began. But it came back on a few minutes later, starting from the top of the show, with the transmitter staying on the air past 1630 UTC to allow the entire program to be broadcast. We are grateful to Space Line for doing this, as illustrated by this tweet from Ralf in Germany.

Then, Sunday at 2330 UTC, we had a repeat of the problem that occurred the previous week: At about 2331, the Shortwave Radiogram audio flipped over to 5010 kHz, another WRMI frequency. At least this time many listeners were aware of the problem and retuned to 5010. That frequency, however, did not propagate very far north of Florida. I heard it in Virginia, with difficulty. Jeff at WRMI tells me the cause of the problem has been found, so we are optimistic that the Sunday 2330 UTC transmission will be nominal this weekend.

Because of the difficult weekend, I arranged for an extra transmission of Shortwave Radiogram on Channel 292 in Germany, 6070 kHz, Wednesday at 1800-1830 UTC, just before Slow Scan Radio. This worked well, even though the propagation at dusk was “interesting.” I have not yet decided if this will be a permanent addition to the Shortwave Radiogram schedule.

There is a video of Shortwave Radiogram program 62 from Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC). Mark in the UK has the audio archive. And Roger in Germany provides analysis.

This weekend, Shortwave Radiogram will transmit in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64, including eight MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 63, 31 August to 3 September 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:31 MFSK32: Program preview (now)
2:51 Studies show aspirin risks outweign benefits*
7:07 MFSK128: Ships abandoned in Nigerian waters*
10:54 MFSK64: Where the Hayabusa2 will land on asteroid*
14:12 Lithium-oxygen batteries are getting an energy boost*
18:14 Tage der offenen Tür im Deutschlandradio-Funkhaus*

Shortwave Radiogram, 7-10 September 2018

Hello friends,

Fortunately, there were no technical mishaps last weekend. And propagation was, for the most part, good. The Friday 2030-2100 UTC transmission on 7780 kHz is beginning to be audible in Europe as the northern hemisphere days become shorter. (And speaking of the days getting shorter, The Mighty KBC's transmission to North America changes to 5960 kHz this Sunday at 0000-0200 UTC; a minute of MFSK64 is at 0130 UTC.)

I was happy to include a news item in German, because of the many Shortwave Radiogram listeners and friends in Germany. There will be more German this weekend, about the Radio Taiwan International German service test transmissions to Europe via Space Line in Bulgaria. The first one is today (Friday) at 1900-1930 UTC on 5900 kHz.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 63) are provided by Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC) and Scott in Ontario (Sunday 2330 UTC). Mark in the UK maintains the audio archive. Roger in Germany produced his analysis.

This weekend, Shortwave Radiogram will transmit in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64, including seven MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 64, 7 to 10 September 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:36 MFSK32: Program preview
2:58 World' largest offshore wind farm launches*
8:01 MFSK128: Bugs will eat more food as temperatures rise*
12:16 MFSK64: Proposed shutdown of WWV, WWVB, WWVH*
18:08 Maersk installs rotating sails on its ship Pelican*
22:03 Testsendungen von Radio Taiwan International*
24:15 Images of the week*
28:23 MFSK32: Closing announcements

Shortwave Radiogram, 14-17 September 2018

Hello friends,

Sorry about the missing Shortwave Radiogram last Friday at 2030-2100 UTC (Brother Stair was heard on WRMI, instead). That was due to an uploading error on my part.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 64) have been provided by DFS in Japan and Ralf in Germany (both Saturday 1600 UTC) and by Scott in Ontario (Sunday 2330 UTC). Excerpts of the Saturday 1600 UTC show are presented in videos by DFS in Japan (outdoor reception) and SWLDXBulgaria. Mark in the UK maintains an audio archive. Roger in Germany produced his analysis.

Last weekend, I noticed "positive slope" in many of the decoded images from Space Line in Bulgaria. On the other hand, "negative slope" is often observed with images from WRMI. This may have to do with the sound cards used to play out the Shortwave Radiogram mp3 file at each of these broadcast facilities.

During the transmission of the first two images of this weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram, observe the vertical lines for slant. If there is slant, in Fldigi: Configure > Sound Card > Settings > Corrections -- adjust the Rx ppm.

If the lines are slanting to the right as they move downward (negative slope), enter 100 in the space, then make smaller adjustments until the lines become completely vertical. (It’s faster to type in 100 than to use the up-down arrows.)

If the lines are slanting to the left as they move downward (positive slope), enter -100 in the space, and adjust from there to achieve a completely vertical lines.

Slant with a negative slope looks like this. Use a positive value of ppm Rx correction to make it straight:
--------
\
\
\
\
--------

Slant with a positive slope looks like this. Use a negative value of ppm Rx correction to make it straight:
--------
/
/
/
/
--------

When you have made your adjustment, click Close but not Save, because you might need another adjustment for future broadcasts.

The image of the lines will be transmitted twice.

For more about slant in MFSK images, see this page from the archive of the VOA Radiogram website.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will be in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 65, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:43 MFSK32: Program preview
2:51 MFSK image slant exercise*
8:25 MFSK128: NASA foldable heat shield*
12:05 MFSK64: China bars Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People"*

Shortwave Radiogram, 21-24 September 2018

Hello friends,

Thanks to everyone who participated in last weekend’s exercise to eliminate slant in MFSK images. Many of you did not see any slant to begin with. This usually happens with direct reception. But if reception is through an SDR, another sound card is involved, increasing the chance for a clash in the sampling rates. This tweet shows how I was able to eliminate the slant during the first image of vertical lines, so that the lines were perfectly (at least to my eye) vertical during the second image.

Recording Shortwave Radiogram gives you another opportunity to eliminate any slant in your MFSK images. You can make the RX ppm adjustment in Fldigi, or use the Audacity software to change the speed of your recording. A (+)100 ppm adjustment in Fldigi would be the same as a (+).01% adjustment in the speed of your playback.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 2030 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan (Saturday 1600 UTC) (see also his Twitter thread showing an inexpensive D-808 receiver connected to a Beverage antenna; his use of a voice recorder might have added additional slant, which he corrected in time for the second image of vertical lines), by Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC). Mark in the UK maintains an audio archive. Roger in Germany provided analysis.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will be in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64, with maybe a mystery mode (and mystery image – to save it, click Save) during the closing music. The show will include eight MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 66, 21-24 September 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

Shortwave Radiogram, 28 September-1 October 2018

Hello friends,

The change of seasons means that some of our frequencies are being heard where they were not heard during the summer – and vice versa. The Friday 2030-2100 UTC broadcast on 7780 kHz continues to improve in Europe. The Monday 0800-0830 broadcast on 5850 or 7730 kHz might also be heard in some parts of Europe. And listeners in western North America might be able to receive the Saturday 1600-1630 UTC transmission on 9400 kHz from Bulgaria.

Last weekend’s show included a “mystery mode” – Thor 22, including an avatar. There will be no time for a mystery mode this weekend, but you never know when one will be inserted at the end of Shortwave Radiogram.

Videos of last weekend’s show (program 66) have been produced by Scott in Ontario (Friday 2030-2100 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan, Marco in Italy, and Ralf in Germany (all Saturday 1600-1630 UTC). Mark in the UK maintains the audio archive. Roger in Germany provides the analysis.

This weekend’s broadcast will be in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64. It includes nine MFSK images, including the Shortwave Radiogram logo at the end of the show.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 67, 28 September-1 October 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:31 MFSK32: Program preview
2:45 Disappearing wetlands put planet life at risk*

Shortwave Radiogram, 5-8 October 2018 iii

Hello friends,

Shortwave propagation has an interesting artistic effect on many of the images transmitted on Shortwave Radiogram – including images that are art in the first place. See what happened to last weekend’s painting as received at three different locations. See many other examples of decoded images at @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 67) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 2030 UTC) and Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram and other programs transmitting text and images is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will begin with an exercise to eliminate (or at least reduce) the annoying slant that sometimes is seen on decoded MFSK images. By eliminating the slant on the first image (an orange vertical rectangle), images decoded later in the broadcast should be slant-free. See details and examples.

This weekend’s broadcast will be in our usual combination of MFSK32, MFSK128, and MFSK64. It includes nine MFSK images, including the rectangular slant test image near the beginning of the show.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 68, 5-8 October 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

1:36 MFSK32: Program preview

2:45 Slant elimination exercise*

5:29 Zebra mussels colonize Rideau River in Ontario*

10:14 MFSK128: Recycling trucks become works of art*

Shortwave Radiogram, 12-15 October 2018

Hello friends,

Last weekend’s slant test produced interesting results. Please note that your sound card might be perfectly calibrated, but slant in MFSK32 images will still occur. This is because of disagreements in the sampling rates of my sound card, the sound card at the shortwave broadcaster, the sound card at any remote SDR you might use, and your sound card. If you use an external digital recorder, that adds another factor that can cause slant. For this reason a slant adjustment at the beginning of each broadcast might be a good idea in the future.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 68) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 2030 UTC), Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1600 UTC), and 2010 DFS in Japan (Monday 0800 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram and other programs transmitting text and images is prepared by Roger in Germany. See program 68 results at https://twitter.com/swradiogram .

This weekend we will transmit the usual combination of MFSK32, 128, and 64, with nine MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 69, 12-15 October 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:
